Set on a single June morning in 1923 in a quaint family-owned cottage in the English countryside, about ninety minutes outside London, the play tips its hat to Noël Coward and the classic sex comedies of the past while adding a decidedly modern, feminist twist. Slamming doors, physical comedy, hilarious twists, and a steady stream of surprising revelations abound. Three couples explode in a farcical comedy of manners by Sandy Rustin.

“It is discouraging how many people are shocked by honesty and how few by deceit.”—Noel Coward

3 Male – 3 Female

Ages 20 – 50

“a romantic and (not quite) murderous comedy.”

“… sidesplitting screwball comedy …  … a fiercely funny play that’s firing on all cylinders, with Rustin’s excellent script.”

“… a naughty romp … Amid the old-fashioned trappings, Rustin nestles a welcome modern sensibility to the plot’s skirmishes of the sexes …”

“… positively delightful … frothy and effervescent.”

Couple #1 : Beau and Marjorie

Marjorie is eight months pregnant. Beau is egotistical, handsome, has no compunction to be faithful, and has several alter-love lives simultaneously active at start of this morning.

Marjorie has one alter love-life. With Beau’s brother, Clarke. She is pragmatic in her approach to marriage.

Couple #2 : Clarke and Sylvia

Clarke is Beau’s brother. He is kind and open-minded and generous in his heart, perhaps to a fault. He is also in love with Marjorie.

Sylvia is a strong-willed romantic. In many ways. Her rash decision sets the play in motion. She is in love with Beau, and wants everyone to know.

Couple #3 : Richard and Dierdre

Very recently divorced, as of this morning. Both have harbored secret lives and loves for many years. Several of them are here in this room, this morning.

All couples embark on a chaotic, emotional, hilarious, sleighride toward uncovering the truth about themselves and each other. In the tradition of Moliere’s Comedy of Manners and Noel Coward’s flamboyant skewering of social hierarchy, the play is a non-stop pinball comedy that resolves in  somewhat of a feminist self discovery, with a smattering of smug complacency.

A perusal script is available. Please contact Alex Wright at director@mendocinotheatre.org
