ABOUT THE PLAY:
The true story of Florence Foster Jenkins— the worst singer in the world. Known as “the first lady of the sliding scale,” she warbled and screeched her way through evenings to bemused audiences in 1940’s New York. The play spins from Florence’s charity recitals and extravagant balls, through to her bizarre recording sessions and an ultimate triumph at Carnegie Hall in this hilarious and heartwarming comedy.
“Delightful and blissfully funny.” —Daily Telegraph
“Hilarious and touching.” —Daily Mail
“A glittering comedy with a heart… lunatically funny.” —Sunday Times
“Comically sublime.” —The Guardian
FROM THE DIRECTOR:
I’d like to personally invite you to audition for Peter Quilter’s Glorious!, which I will be directing as the third production in this 50th Anniversary Season, and OMG my 27th for MTC! Based on the real life story of Florence Foster Jenkins, Glorious! Is a hilarious romp about Lady Florence, who fancied herself a great operatic diva, but was more commonly known as the ‘lady of the sliding scale.’ In other words, she sang horribly! The play is set in New York in late summer/early fall of 1944, while World War 2 raged across two oceans. The first time and every time I read the play I laugh out loud and then at the end of Act 2 I’m in tears. We’ll read selected scenes from the script, so you don’t need tp learn anything in advance of auditions. I do suggest that, if you have access to YouTube, you watch a terrific documentary about Florence entitled Florence Foster Jenkins: A World of Her Own. My plan is to cast the play well in advance of our May 11 start of rehearsals so we can hit the ground running. Please call me with any questions at 707-357-2075. Happy to talk.
